Veranstaltung: The Traveling Atomic Exhibition in Cold War Italy (Feb. 24, 2022), Online Talk

The Chair of Science, Technology and Gender Studies (STGS) at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, headed by Prof. Maria Rentetzi, invites you to participate in an online event on Thursday, February 24 (18:00 CET): a guest lecture by Dr. Donatella Germanese (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science) entitled “The Traveling Atomic Exhibition in Cold War Italy.”

Abstract:

The mobile atomic exhibition of the United States Information Service was launched in Italy in June 1954 and traveled around the world in special trailers that also served as showrooms. The exhibition aimed to popularize nuclear science and its non-military applications, showing many objects, informative panels, and short film screenings. In her talk, Donatella Germanese will explain the political context that let the US opt for the launch of the atomic exhibition in Italy, its organization at international, national, and local levels, and the public response as reported in the press. Despite the Cold War constraints that crystallized in the preparation of the exhibition, they were blanked out in the utopian, egalitarian vision of the atom presented.
